US Warns Citizens Against Travel to 23 Countries Over Security Risks
The United States government has renewed its warning to American citizens, advising them not to travel to 23 countries due to heightened security concerns ranging from armed conflict and terrorism to kidnapping, political instability, and violent crime.
The advisory, issued through the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory system, places the affected countries under its highest warning category—Level 4: Do Not Travel.
The warning is intended to protect U.S. citizens from significant security threats that could endanger their lives while abroad.
According to U.S. authorities, travellers should avoid destinations experiencing ongoing:
- Armed conflicts
- Terrorist activities
- Widespread civil unrest
- Weak law enforcement
- High risks of kidnapping and wrongful detention.
Countries on the “Do Not Travel” List
The countries currently listed under the highest advisory include:
- Afghanistan
- Belarus
- Burkina Faso
- Central African Republic
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Haiti
- Iran
- Iraq
- Lebanon
- Libya
- Mali
- Myanmar (Burma)
- North Korea
- Russia
- Somalia
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Syria
- Ukraine
- Venezuela
- Yemen
- Mozambique (Cabo Delgado Province)
- Nigeria (specific high-risk areas only)
While Nigeria is not entirely under a Level 4 advisory, the U.S. government continues to caution against travel to certain states affected by terrorism, kidnapping, and armed criminal activities.
The State Department noted that travel advisories are reviewed regularly and may be updated based on evolving security conditions, intelligence assessments, and local developments.
Travellers are encouraged to monitor official advisories before embarking on international trips, register with their respective embassies where possible, and maintain comprehensive travel insurance.
Security analysts say such advisories are precautionary measures designed to help citizens make informed travel decisions rather than outright travel bans.
As global security challenges continue to evolve, governments worldwide are increasingly issuing updated travel guidance to safeguard their citizens overseas.
