Sadiq Goal Gives Doma United 1-0 Win Over Inter Lagos in NPFL

Published

on

Doma United continued their impressive start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a narrow 1-0 victory over fellow newcomers Inter Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Saturday.

Rilwanu Sadiq scored the decisive goal in the 71st minute, giving the Savannah Tigers all three points in a tightly contested Matchday Two encounter.

The victory means Doma United have won both of their opening matches since earning promotion to the NPFL.

They began their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Sporting Lagos before following it up with another win on the road in Lagos.

Inter Lagos, on the other hand, are still searching for their first point of the campaign.

The Lagos-based newcomers had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Shooting Stars in their opening fixture.

Sadiq’s goal came in the second half as Doma United eventually found a breakthrough after both sides struggled to make the most of their opportunities.

The forward’s 71st-minute finish proved sufficient as the visitors held on to secure another valuable away victory.

The result further highlights Doma United’s strong adaptation to top-flight football following their promotion.

Their early-season performances have been characterised by defensive organisation, discipline and an ability to make the most of key moments.

Technical adviser Ayodeji Ayeni had previously praised his players for their tactical discipline and teamwork after their opening-day victory against Sporting Lagos.

Those qualities were again evident against Inter Lagos as Doma United protected their lead until the final whistle.

For Inter Lagos, the defeat adds to a difficult spell. The club have now lost their opening two league fixtures and have suffered three defeats in their last five competitive matches dating back to last season.

Despite the setback, Inter Lagos had previously enjoyed an impressive home record, winning nine of their last 10 home matches over the same period before Saturday’s defeat.

The victory also represents a positive turnaround for Doma United after the club had endured a two-match losing streak.

They have now won three of their last five competitive matches, suggesting a return to form at an important stage of the campaign.

Saturday’s encounter was the first meeting between the two clubs in the NPFL top flight.

Doma United also recorded their second consecutive away victory against Inter Lagos-based opposition, having previously defeated Sporting Lagos 2-0 in Lagos on the opening weekend.

With two wins from two matches, Doma United will look to maintain their perfect start when they return to action, while Inter Lagos face the task of securing their first points of the new campaign.

Flamingos Beat Brazil 3-1 to Reach 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Final

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in their semi-final encounter.

The Nigerian girls recorded the historic victory on Wednesday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, to move within one win of claiming the tournament’s coveted trophy.

The encounter was goalless at half-time, with both teams struggling to find a breakthrough despite creating opportunities.

However, the Flamingos returned stronger after the interval and broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Queen Joseph, who found the back of the net after receiving an assist from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru finished off an attacking move to put Coach Akeem Busari’s side firmly in control of the encounter.

The victory over Venezuela marked only the second time Nigeria had reached the semi-final stage of the competition. Their previous appearance came in 2022, when they finished with a bronze medal in India.

Meanwhile, Brazil had secured their semi-final place after overcoming China 2-1 in the quarter-finals, having previously eliminated Poland in the round of 16 through a dramatic 8-7 penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw.

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to the final against Japan on Saturday, November 7, 2026, where they will have an opportunity to make history by becoming world champions at the U-17 levels.

Mbappé Apologises, But China Maintains Ban on La Liga Broadcasts

Published

on

China’s state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), has refused to broadcast a Real Madrid match despite an apology from French football star Kylian Mbappé over controversial remarks involving the late Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.

According to the BBC on Monday, the decision was enforced on Sunday when Real Madrid faced Racing Santander in a La Liga fixture, winning 3-0 through goals from Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande.

China Media Group (CMG), the parent organisation of CCTV, had announced last Tuesday that it would suspend broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches following widespread outrage over Mbappé’s comments.

The controversy began after the French forward reportedly said during an appearance on French talk show The Bridge that the funniest meme he had seen was one showing his face superimposed on the image of a Chinese dictator resembling Mao.

The remarks sparked anger in China, where Mao remains a highly sensitive historical and political figure.

Mbappé subsequently apologised, admitting that his comments were ill-judged and acknowledging that they had offended many people in China and Chinese communities around the world.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it took the apology seriously, while Real Madrid and La Liga also issued apologies over the incident.

However, CMG had earlier insisted that apologies from Mbappé, Real Madrid and La Liga were an absolute prerequisite for resolving the controversy.

Although the broadcaster has acknowledged the apologies, it has yet to announce when coverage of La Liga matches will resume.

The controversy has also reportedly resulted in several Chinese brands dropping Mbappé from their promotional campaigns.

Mao, who founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949 after leading the Communist Party to victory in the civil war, died in 1976.

His rule included the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, periods associated with mass famine, political persecution and widespread violence.

China has previously taken similar action against international sporting organisations over political controversies.

In October 2019, Chinese broadcasters suspended NBA coverage for about a year after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressed support for Hong Kong protesters in a social media post.

Morey later sought to clarify his position, saying he had listened to other perspectives and never intended to offend Chinese fans or sponsors.

The latest dispute underscores the potential commercial consequences international sports figures and organisations may face when their public comments conflict with China’s political sensitivities.

Nigerian Samson Adamu Appointed CAF General Secretary

Published

Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the latest Nigerian to occupy a key administrative position in African football.

CAF announced the appointment in a statement published on its official website on Sunday, following what it described as a comprehensive recruitment process.

Adamu had been serving as Acting General Secretary since March, following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who later became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The new CAF General Secretary has spent eight years with the continental football governing body, having joined the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.

During his time at CAF, Adamu played a leading role in organising several major continental football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, commenting on the appointment, said Adamu’s experience and understanding of the organisation made him suitable for the position.

“Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.

“He has played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions, including CAF’s flagship tournament, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations,” Motsepe was quoted as saying.

Adamu is a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an academic qualification that focuses on the management and administration of sports.

In his new position, he is expected to oversee CAF’s day-to-day administrative operations and support the implementation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.

He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in Nigeria’s then Ministry of Sports and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee.

His appointment also places him among a succession of CAF General Secretaries with family connections to the position, particularly members of Egypt’s Fahmy family.

Mourad Fahmy served as CAF General Secretary from 1961 to 1982 before his son, Mustapha Fahmy, took over and held the position until 2010.

Amr Fahmy, the grandson of Mourad, also served as CAF General Secretary between 2017 and 2019.
