Benue APC Stakeholders Endorse Alia, Tinubu, Warn Against ‘Rainbow Coalition’

Published

on

Leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State have endorsed the re-election bids of Governor Hyacinth Alia and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, while cautioning members against actions capable of weakening the party’s unity.

The stakeholders, operating under the Concerned Benue APC Stakeholders and Strategic Alliance, made their position known at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

The group’s convener, Dr Dominic Alancha, who addressed journalists, stressed that the APC was bigger than any individual, leader, aspirant or political group.

Alancha urged party members to place the collective interest of the APC above personal disagreements, particularly as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.

He said, “The APC is bigger than any individual, leader, aspirant or political group. Personal disagreements should not be allowed to take precedence over the collective interest of the party.”

The convener disclosed that he had previously opposed Governor Alia’s re-election bid but said he changed his position after reviewing what he described as the broader interest of the party.

According to him, party members with grievances against the governor or APC leadership should use the party’s recognised organs and internal dispute-resolution mechanisms rather than engage in activities that could undermine the party.

“Members who have grievances against the governor or the party leadership should utilise the recognised organs and internal mechanisms of the APC rather than engage in activities that could weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections,” he said.

Alancha also maintained that any alleged violation of the APC constitution or rules should be handled by the appropriate authorities through due process, regardless of the status or influence of the individuals involved.

The stakeholders backed the Alia administration, arguing that its performance in office provided grounds for the governor to seek another term.

They also declared support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, saying members of the group would mobilise support for both the President and the Benue governor ahead of the 2027 polls.

The group called on APC elders, leaders and members across Benue to resolve their differences through dialogue and make use of the party’s established structures.

Alancha further urged the APC leadership to uphold the supremacy of the party’s constitution and ensure that disciplinary measures, where necessary, were applied fairly and in accordance with established procedures.

He also appealed to Governor Alia to remain focused on governance and the implementation of his administration’s programmes, while urging party members to concentrate on mobilising support for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

The stakeholders also appealed to members aligned with different political camps to embrace reconciliation.

They cautioned against what they described as a “rainbow coalition”, which they said could undermine the unity of the party.

“Our position is simple: the party must come first, Benue must come first, and all stakeholders should work towards strengthening the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Alancha said.

The position comes amid wider disagreements within the APC over political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly involving some APC governors and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The dispute centres partly on the question of whether APC members should support only candidates fielded by the party across different electoral contests.

While the APC governors have maintained support for the party’s candidates, Wike has backed Tinubu’s presidential bid while retaining his position that he should be free to support candidates outside the APC in other contests.

The Benue APC stakeholders, however, said party members should prioritise unity, reconciliation and the strengthening of the party as the 2027 elections approach.

Anambra Dismisses Claims of Substandard Roads, Promises Free Repairs

The Anambra State Government has dismissed allegations that roads constructed under Governor Chukwuma Soludo are substandard, describing criticisms circulating on social media as politically motivated.

The state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Okey Ezeobi, said the administration’s road construction projects remained largely intact, with more than 95 per cent of completed roads reportedly in good condition.

Ezeobi stated this on Wednesday during a press briefing in Awka, where he addressed public concerns over the quality and condition of roads constructed across the state under the Soludo administration. He added that some Federal Government road projects had equally experienced similar challenges due to the impact of the rainfall.

The commissioner said the state government would remove damaged asphalt from affected sections and introduce cement-based stabilisation to address underground water problems and prevent further deterioration.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure, while also noting that the South-East had benefited from Federal Government interventions in road construction and infrastructure investment.

Months After Failed Coup, Wadagni Shakes Up Benin Military Leadership

Published

Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, has reshuffled the country’s military leadership, nearly a year after a failed coup attempt and amid growing security threats in the West African nation.

Wadagni announced the changes on Wednesday, appointing new heads for the army, air force and navy as his administration intensifies efforts to address security challenges facing the country.

The reshuffle comes months after Beninese soldiers loyal to the government foiled an attempt by some military officers to overthrow former President Patrice Talon in December 2025.

France and Nigeria reportedly supported efforts to prevent the coup.

Following the failed plot, Talon had declared that the situation in the country was “completely under control”, crediting loyalist soldiers with helping to protect his administration.

Wadagni, who served as economy minister under Talon for 10 years, succeeded him as president in April 2026.

Under the latest changes, General Abou Issa has been appointed to replace General Fructeux Gbaguidi as Chief of Army Staff.

Gbaguidi will now serve as the permanent secretary of the National Defence and Security Council.

Wadagni also appointed Colonel Andre Dokoui Fofo as head of the land-based military, while Colonel Herve Setondji Allotchenou will lead the air force.

Captain Dossa Hounkpatin was named the new head of the navy.

The military shake-up comes as Benin faces an increasingly difficult security situation, particularly in its northern regions, where jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have intensified activities across the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger.

The worsening security situation is among the major challenges confronting Wadagni, who assumed office in April after spending a decade overseeing the country’s economy.

His administration is also facing diplomatic challenges arising from strained relations with neighbouring Sahel countries, which are currently governed by military juntas.

The juntas have expressed distrust towards Benin over its close relations with France, a development that has complicated regional security cooperation.

The latest military appointments are expected to form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s defence structure and respond to emerging security threats.
