Police Arrest 14 Suspects, Recover Stolen Cows, Motorcycles, Cables in Jigawa
The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 14 suspects and recovered stolen cows, motorcycles, cable wires and a goat in a series of intelligence-driven operations across the state.
The arrests and recoveries were made as part of ongoing efforts by the command to tackle cattle rustling, motorcycle theft, vandalism and other criminal activities.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
According to Adam, the command recorded significant operational successes over the past week through intelligence-led patrols and collaboration with vigilante groups, community neighbourhood watch teams and the Civilian Joint Task Force.
He said on September 1, 2026, operatives attached to the Jahun Police Division intercepted a Volkswagen Golf wagon with registration number AS 305 UGH, which was parked by the roadside after Lautai Village with three cows inside.
Four suspects identified as Sunusi Muhammad, 45; Yaro Danladi, 25; Nuhu Mohammed; and Adamu Muhammad, 25, all from Abunabo Village in Guri Local Government Area, were arrested.
The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation, after which the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for discreet investigation.
In a separate operation on the same day, police intercepted 27-year-old Aliyu Mohammed of Gashua, Bade LGA, Yobe State, along the Hadejia-Kano Road while riding a TVS motorcycle.
Adam said Mohammed could not satisfactorily explain how he came into possession of the motorcycle and later confessed to stealing it from Maradi, Niger Republic, with the intention of selling it in Kano.
The command also recorded an arrest in connection with cable vandalism in Gwiwa.
The police spokesperson said operatives from the Gwiwa Division, acting on a report received on August 31, arrested three suspects—Usamatu Abdullahi, 20; Yusuf Salisu, 19; and Yakubu Abdullahi, 19—all from Indirawa Village.
The suspects were allegedly responsible for removing and stealing security-light cable wires valued at N700,000. The vandalised cable wires were subsequently recovered.
Similarly, police arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of a Bajaj motorcycle reported on September 8.
According to Adam, Aminu Aliyu, 40, of Dan Masara Quarters, Dutse, reported that his red Bajaj motorcycle, with registration number GRM-420VH, had been stolen after it was parked near his farm at Manuna Yabaza Village.
Investigation reportedly led to the arrest of Ibrahim Rabiu, 35, of Yabaza Village in Birnin Kudu LGA. The suspect allegedly confessed to the offence, while the stolen motorcycle was recovered.
Also on September 8, police, working with vigilante members, arrested 18-year-old Mohammed Bello Aminu of Tsangaya Quarters, Birnin Kudu.
He was reportedly found in possession of armoured cable wire allegedly stolen from the Gidan Dawaki area of Bamaina District and confessed to the offence during investigation.
In another operation conducted on September 7, police arrested Musa Adamu, 30, of Jumunu Settlement Camp in Garki LGA, and Alhassan Usman, 40, of Gidan Maza Village, Ringim LGA.
The suspects were found with a goat and an unregistered blue Honda motorcycle suspected to have been stolen. Both men reportedly confessed during interrogation.
Meanwhile, a joint patrol involving the police and Kazaure Community Neighbourhood Watch recovered a new red Daylong motorcycle hidden in farmland along the Kazaure-Yankwashi Road on September 4.
Adam said investigation revealed that the motorcycle belonged to Umar Ado, 20, of Takwasa Village, who was reportedly knocked down by passengers on September 3, after which his motorcycle was taken away.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
In another case, police operatives and members of the CJTF Hadejia arrested 19-year-old Ibrahim Badamasi of Nasarawa Quarters, Hadejia, on September 6.
He was reportedly found with Boxer motorcycle parts suspected to have been stolen.
During investigation, Badamasi allegedly confessed to receiving the motorcycle from 23-year-old Auwal Kabiru of Dala Quarters, Hadejia, before dismantling it.
Kabiru was subsequently arrested and reportedly mentioned one Abba Isa Ruwa, whom police described as a suspected notorious criminal, as the source of the motorcycle. Ruwa is currently at large.
The police said various types of spanners believed to have been used to dismantle motorcycles were also recovered from the residence of one of the suspects.
Adam said investigations into all the cases were ongoing, adding that the suspects would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.
Commending the personnel and community partners involved in the operations, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, praised police officers, vigilante members, community neighbourhood watch teams and CJTF personnel for their vigilance and cooperation.
He urged members of the public to continue providing useful information to security agencies to help prevent criminal activities and enhance security across the state.

33 Illegal Miners Feared Dead After NSCDC Detention in Niger
No fewer than 33 suspected illegal miners are feared dead after being detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
The suspects were arrested during an operation targeting illegal mining activities across the state and were subsequently detained at an NSCDC facility in Minna.
The deaths were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026, according to the Niger State Command of the NSCDC.
The state Commandant, Suberu Aniviye, confirmed that scores of detained suspects had died, attributing the deaths to a suspected outbreak of disease.
Aniviye disclosed that the command carried out a “burst operation” on September 15 and 16 as part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the state.
According to him, the operation resulted in the arrest of scores of suspected illegal miners and the recovery of various exhibits.
He, however, said the situation took a tragic turn in the early hours of Thursday when several of the detained suspects were found dead.
“The operation yielded significant results, with scores of suspected illegal miners arrested and various exhibits recovered.
“However, in the early hours of 17th September, 2026, scores of the detained suspects were found dead, following a suspected outbreak of disease,” the commandant said in a statement.
Aniviye added that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination to determine the actual cause of death.
Although the NSCDC has not officially disclosed the number of deceased suspects, a source at the General Hospital, Minna, told PUNCH Online that 33 bodies had been brought to the facility.
The source further said the deaths were suspected to be linked to diphtheria, although this has not been officially confirmed by the NSCDC or medical authorities.
The uncertainty over the exact number of deaths and the cause has heightened concerns among residents and relatives of the detained suspects.
Residents of M.I. Wushishi and Mekunkle, believed to have relatives among those detained, reportedly staged protests on Thursday following the spread of news about the deaths.
Efforts by PUNCH Online to obtain further clarification from the NSCDC spokesman in Niger State, Muhammad Muti, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone were unanswered. Messages sent via SMS and WhatsApp had also not received a response as of the time of filing the report.
The NSCDC command appealed for calm among the families of the deceased and members of the public, urging them to avoid actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.
Aniviye said the corps was working with sister security agencies to manage the situation and maintain peace.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of the NSCDC to enforcing human rights standards and complying with international human rights charters.
The development comes amid ongoing concerns over illegal mining activities in Niger State and their associated security, environmental and public health implications.
Further medical examinations are expected to establish the cause of death and provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the detained suspects.
