Seven European Clubs Chase Unbeaten League Campaigns in 2026/27 Season
Seven clubs across Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga remain unbeaten in their domestic leagues as the 2026/27 season progresses, raising hopes of completing one of football’s rarest achievements: an entire league campaign without defeat.
The teams are Inter Milan, Roma, Lazio, AC Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
While clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have produced remarkable points tallies in previous seasons, finishing a league campaign unbeaten remains a special milestone in European football.
Interestingly, no club from the English Premier League or French Ligue 1 features among the seven unbeaten sides, leaving the remaining contenders spread across three of Europe’s major domestic competitions.
According to a report by Planet Football on Sunday, the clubs have made encouraging starts to their respective campaigns, although their prospects of maintaining their records until the end of the season vary.
Inter Milan
Reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan have started their title defence impressively under manager Cristian Chivu, winning six of their opening seven league matches.
The Nerazzurri have demonstrated considerable attacking strength, scoring 21 goals in their opening fixtures. However, conceding nine goals suggests that defensive improvements will be necessary if they hope to maintain their unbeaten record throughout the campaign.
Their domestic performances have contrasted with a less convincing start in European competition, where defeats to Real Madrid and Club Brugge exposed weaknesses before a narrow victory over Shakhtar Donetsk offered some encouragement.
Inter possess the experience and attacking quality required to sustain a title challenge. However, Chivu will need to improve the team’s defensive organisation to keep their hopes of an unbeaten season alive.
Roma
Roma are seeking to end their long wait for another Serie A title, having last won the Scudetto in the 2000/01 season under Fabio Capello.
The Italian club also came close to lifting the title in the 2009/10 campaign, when Claudio Ranieri guided them to second place behind Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter Milan.
Under Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma will hope to build a competitive side capable of challenging for the championship.
Gasperini earned widespread recognition during his time at Atalanta, where he developed an attacking team and led the club to Europa League glory. However, a Serie A title remains absent from his managerial honours.
Roma’s early-season performances have offered encouragement, but their inability to protect two-goal leads against Inter and Real Madrid has raised questions about their composure in difficult situations.
Maintaining their unbeaten run will require greater defensive resilience and better game management, particularly against the strongest teams in the division.
For Roma, an unbeaten campaign would represent a remarkable achievement and potentially end their lengthy wait for domestic league glory.
Lazio
Lazio have emerged as one of the early talking points in Serie A under manager Gennaro.
Gattuso.
The former midfielder has an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in club football following a difficult spell in charge of Italy’s national team.
After winning their pre-season friendlies, Lazio have carried their momentum into the league, recording six victories from their opening seven matches.
One of their standout performances was a convincing 3-0 away victory over Juventus, demonstrating their ability to compete against established Italian heavyweights.
However, sustaining such performances across a full season will be a significant challenge.
Lazio will need consistency, squad depth and defensive discipline to remain unbeaten, but their strong start has given supporters reason to believe the club could challenge for major honours.
AC Milan
AC Milan have also maintained an unbeaten domestic record, although their early performances suggest there is still considerable room for improvement.
Three draws in their opening seven league matches have prevented the Rossoneri from making a stronger statement in the title race.
Manager Ruben Amorim faces the challenge of building consistency and transforming promising performances into victories.
Milan’s history and ambition make them natural contenders for domestic honours, but avoiding defeat is only one part of the equation.
To sustain a championship challenge, they must find ways to win closely contested matches and reduce unnecessary dropped points.
Their reported 3-0 Europa League defeat to Bournemouth has also highlighted the work required to establish greater consistency across competitions.
For Milan, the immediate priority will be strengthening their performances while preserving their unbeaten domestic run.
Barcelona
Barcelona remain among the most intriguing candidates for an unbeaten league campaign in 2026/27.
Although their perfect start across all competitions ended with a 4-2 Champions League defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain, their domestic record remains intact.
The Catalan club possess considerable attacking quality, technical ability and experience, giving them the resources to mount a sustained challenge in La Liga.
However, maintaining an unbeaten record in Spain will require consistent performances against both established rivals and teams capable of frustrating them.
Their El Clasico meeting with Real Madrid represents a major test of their title credentials. A positive result would strengthen Barcelona’s confidence and potentially provide an important advantage in the race for domestic honours.
Barcelona have previously dominated Spanish football, but completing an entire league campaign without defeat would demand sustained excellence over several months.
If they maintain their current domestic form, they could emerge as serious contenders for one of European football’s most difficult achievements.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich remain among the strongest candidates to finish the Bundesliga season unbeaten, given their longstanding dominance of German football.
The Bavarian giants have continued to demonstrate their attacking strength under Vincent Kompany, producing performances that underline their ability to overwhelm opponents.
Their campaign has not been entirely without setbacks, with goalless draws against Schalke and a stalemate against Augsburg highlighting occasional diffiuulties in turning dominance into victories.
Nevertheless, Bayern’s attacking performances have been particularly impressive. They have scored seven goals against Union Berlin and six against RB Leipzig, demonstrating the depth of their offensive threat.
Their ability to create and convert chances makes them one of the leading contenders to preserve an unbeaten domestic record.
However, defensive concentration and consistency will remain crucial, particularly against opponents capable of exploiting spaces and disrupting Bayern’s rhythm.
With Kompany overseeing the team, Bayern will be eager to maintain their domestic supremacy and potentially achieve an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign.
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund are continuing their pursuit of the consistency required to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance of German football.
Dortmund last won the Bundesliga title in the 2011/12 season under Jurgen Klopp and have since struggled to sustain the form required to consistently finish ahead of their biggest domestic rivals.
The club initially appeared capable of mounting a serious challenge this season after recording four consecutive victories.
However, successive draws have slowed their momentum and allowed Bayern to move ahead in the title race.
Although Dortmund remain unbeaten, their dropped points underline the difference between avoiding defeat and maintaining the winning consistency needed to become champions.
The club have the talent to compete with the Bundesliga’s leading sides, but they must improve their ability to turn draws into victories.
Their unbeaten record offers encouragement, yet their prospects of sustaining a title challenge will depend on how effectively they respond to setbacks and maintain their form over the remainder of the season.
Unbeaten Records Face Their Biggest Test
The seven clubs have demonstrated their ability to avoid defeat during the opening stages of the 2026/27 campaign, but maintaining that record until the final matchday will be a considerably greater challenge.
Inter Milan, Lazio and Bayern Munich have shown impressive attacking potential, while Barcelona possess the technical quality and experience to remain competitive in La Liga.
Roma and AC Milan must improve their consistency, while Borussia Dortmund need to turn dropped points into victories if they hope to challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga title.
An unbeaten league campaign requires more than individual brilliance. Squad depth, injury management, tactical flexibility and the ability to secure results during difficult periods are all essential.
With the season still unfolding, the seven clubs will need to sustain their performances against increasingly familiar opponents and mounting pressure.
Whether any of them can complete the campaign without defeat remains uncertain, but their early records have placed them among the teams to watch in European football this season.

Mbappé Apologises, But China Maintains Ban on La Liga Broadcasts
China’s state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), has refused to broadcast a Real Madrid match despite an apology from French football star Kylian Mbappé over controversial remarks involving the late Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.
According to the BBC on Monday, the decision was enforced on Sunday when Real Madrid faced Racing Santander in a La Liga fixture, winning 3-0 through goals from Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande.
China Media Group (CMG), the parent organisation of CCTV, had announced last Tuesday that it would suspend broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches following widespread outrage over Mbappé’s comments.
The controversy began after the French forward reportedly said during an appearance on French talk show The Bridge that the funniest meme he had seen was one showing his face superimposed on the image of a Chinese dictator resembling Mao.
The remarks sparked anger in China, where Mao remains a highly sensitive historical and political figure.
Mbappé subsequently apologised, admitting that his comments were ill-judged and acknowledging that they had offended many people in China and Chinese communities around the world.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it took the apology seriously, while Real Madrid and La Liga also issued apologies over the incident.
However, CMG had earlier insisted that apologies from Mbappé, Real Madrid and La Liga were an absolute prerequisite for resolving the controversy.
Although the broadcaster has acknowledged the apologies, it has yet to announce when coverage of La Liga matches will resume.
The controversy has also reportedly resulted in several Chinese brands dropping Mbappé from their promotional campaigns.
Mao, who founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949 after leading the Communist Party to victory in the civil war, died in 1976.
His rule included the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, periods associated with mass famine, political persecution and widespread violence.
China has previously taken similar action against international sporting organisations over political controversies.
In October 2019, Chinese broadcasters suspended NBA coverage for about a year after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressed support for Hong Kong protesters in a social media post.
Morey later sought to clarify his position, saying he had listened to other perspectives and never intended to offend Chinese fans or sponsors.
The latest dispute underscores the potential commercial consequences international sports figures and organisations may face when their public comments conflict with China’s political sensitivities.

Nigerian Samson Adamu Appointed CAF General Secretary
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the latest Nigerian to occupy a key administrative position in African football.
CAF announced the appointment in a statement published on its official website on Sunday, following what it described as a comprehensive recruitment process.
Adamu had been serving as Acting General Secretary since March, following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who later became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The new CAF General Secretary has spent eight years with the continental football governing body, having joined the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.
During his time at CAF, Adamu played a leading role in organising several major continental football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF President Patrice Motsepe, commenting on the appointment, said Adamu’s experience and understanding of the organisation made him suitable for the position.
“Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.
“He has played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions, including CAF’s flagship tournament, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations,” Motsepe was quoted as saying.
Adamu is a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an academic qualification that focuses on the management and administration of sports.
In his new position, he is expected to oversee CAF’s day-to-day administrative operations and support the implementation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.
He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in Nigeria’s then Ministry of Sports and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee.
His appointment also places him among a succession of CAF General Secretaries with family connections to the position, particularly members of Egypt’s Fahmy family.
Mourad Fahmy served as CAF General Secretary from 1961 to 1982 before his son, Mustapha Fahmy, took over and held the position until 2010.
Amr Fahmy, the grandson of Mourad, also served as CAF General Secretary between 2017 and 2019.

Awoniyi Scores First League Goal as Coventry Defeat Sunderland
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi ended his Premier League goal drought on Saturday as Coventry City secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal of the 2026/27 campaign in the encounter, providing a timely boost for Frank Lampard’s side in their battle to avoid relegation.
The Nigerian forward found the back of the net in the 37th minute to double Coventry’s advantage after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
His goal ended a frustrating wait for a league breakthrough this season, having managed just one other goal in the EFL Cup.
Awoniyi delivered an impressive performance, repeatedly troubling Sunderland’s defence before being substituted in the 72nd minute.
The encounter was regarded as a crucial relegation battle between Coventry and bottom-placed Sunderland, who are managed by Régis Le Bris.
Coventry strengthened their grip on the contest seven minutes into the second half when Jack Rudoni scored in the 52nd minute to make it 3-0.
Sunderland reduced the deficit in the 67th minute through Enzo Le Fée, who converted a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee review.
However, the visitors struggled to build on the goal and failed to mount a serious comeback against the hosts.
Their difficult afternoon was compounded in the 99th minute when defender Omar Alderete received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Sunderland with 10 players.
The victory handed Coventry three valuable points as they continue their fight for Premier League survival, while Awoniyi’s breakthrough goal will provide encouragement as the season progresses.
