Messi Reveals Advice Ronaldinho Gave Him at 16 in Barcelona
Lionel Messi has revealed how Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho and other senior Barcelona players helped him overcome his shyness and nervousness as a teenager, advising him to ignore the pressure of playing alongside established stars and focus on enjoying football.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he struggled to adjust to Barcelona’s first-team environment at the age of 16, despite showing the exceptional talent that would eventually establish him as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Speaking to students in Oviedo on Thursday ahead of receiving the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, the Inter Miami forward recalled how the presence of some of football’s biggest names initially intimidated him.
“I had to walk into a first-division dressing room packed with stars when I was just 16. I was nervous.
“I had people like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o, Xavi, Carlos Puyol and many others around me,” Messi said, according to GB News on Friday.
The Argentine admitted that his naturally reserved personality made it difficult for him to settle into the dressing room and feel comfortable among his more experienced teammates.
“It was difficult for me because of my personality. I’m shy and I found it hard to come out of my shell,” he said.
However, Messi said his senior teammates encouraged him to put aside the pressure of playing alongside celebrated footballers and concentrate on the game he had loved since childhood.
According to the forward, their advice was to forget the surrounding circumstances, enjoy himself and continue doing what had brought him to the club.
“What they told me was to forget about everything, forget the context and just enjoy myself and do what I had been doing all my life since I was a kid, without thinking about who was next to me.
“They told me to do what I loved doing and what I enjoyed,” Messi said.
The advice proved valuable as Messi went on to become Barcelona’s all-time leading goalscorer, winning multiple domestic and international honours during his remarkable spell at the Spanish club.
Ronaldinho recognised Messi’s potential
Ronaldinho, who was among Barcelona’s established stars when Messi joined the first team, reportedly recognised the teenager’s extraordinary potential from their earliest training sessions.
According to Guillem Balague’s biography, Messi, the Brazilian contacted journalist Cristina Cubero after training with the youngster and made a bold prediction about his future.
“I’ve just finished training with someone who is going to be better than me,” Ronaldinho reportedly said.
The remark reflected the impression Messi had made on the Brazilian, who was one of the leading figures in Barcelona’s squad at the time.
Messi subsequently developed into one of the most decorated players in football history, winning four UEFA Champions League titles and 10 La Liga championships with Barcelona, alongside numerous individual awards.
Messi reflects on learning to lose
Beyond recalling his early years at Barcelona, Messi also spoke about the importance of accepting defeat, describing the ability to handle disappointment as a fundamental lesson for every footballer.
The Argentine said players must understand that success cannot be guaranteed in every competition and that personal satisfaction should also come from knowing they gave their best effort.
Drawing on his experiences in major tournaments, including Argentina’s defeat to Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final in Brazil and unsuccessful Champions League campaigns, Messi said the final result should not be the only measure of a player’s performance.
“You may or may not achieve your goal, but you have to be satisfied knowing that you gave it your all and that you can feel complete beyond the final result,” he said.
He stressed that while winning remains an important objective in football, learning to handle losses is equally essential because defeat is an unavoidable part of competitive sport.
“The most important thing is knowing how to lose. Knowing how to win, too, because there are a lot of people who don’t know how to win.
“But knowing how to lose is fundamental in this sport because you lose far more often than you win.
“You shouldn’t get used to losing, but you do have to understand that you can lose, and you have to accept it,” Messi added.
His comments highlight the importance of resilience, discipline and emotional maturity in a sport where even the most talented players and successful teams experience setbacks.
Messi continues decorated career at Inter Miami
Messi continues to play for Inter Miami in the United States after leaving European football, having added the FIFA World Cup to his list of achievements with Argentina in Qatar in 2022.
Before lifting the World Cup, he helped Argentina end a 28-year wait for a major senior international trophy by winning the 2021 Copa América.
Argentina’s triumph in Qatar secured the country’s third World Cup title and completed a significant chapter in Messi’s international career.
His journey from a shy teenager trying to establish himself among Barcelona’s superstars to a global football icon underscores the value of confidence, support from experienced teammates and the determination to remain focused on one’s abilities.
The advice he received at 16, Messi’s reflections suggest, remains relevant throughout a career in which success and disappointment have both played important roles.

Mbappé Apologises, But China Maintains Ban on La Liga Broadcasts
China’s state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), has refused to broadcast a Real Madrid match despite an apology from French football star Kylian Mbappé over controversial remarks involving the late Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.
According to the BBC on Monday, the decision was enforced on Sunday when Real Madrid faced Racing Santander in a La Liga fixture, winning 3-0 through goals from Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande.
China Media Group (CMG), the parent organisation of CCTV, had announced last Tuesday that it would suspend broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches following widespread outrage over Mbappé’s comments.
The controversy began after the French forward reportedly said during an appearance on French talk show The Bridge that the funniest meme he had seen was one showing his face superimposed on the image of a Chinese dictator resembling Mao.
The remarks sparked anger in China, where Mao remains a highly sensitive historical and political figure.
Mbappé subsequently apologised, admitting that his comments were ill-judged and acknowledging that they had offended many people in China and Chinese communities around the world.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it took the apology seriously, while Real Madrid and La Liga also issued apologies over the incident.
However, CMG had earlier insisted that apologies from Mbappé, Real Madrid and La Liga were an absolute prerequisite for resolving the controversy.
Although the broadcaster has acknowledged the apologies, it has yet to announce when coverage of La Liga matches will resume.
The controversy has also reportedly resulted in several Chinese brands dropping Mbappé from their promotional campaigns.
Mao, who founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949 after leading the Communist Party to victory in the civil war, died in 1976.
His rule included the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, periods associated with mass famine, political persecution and widespread violence.
China has previously taken similar action against international sporting organisations over political controversies.
In October 2019, Chinese broadcasters suspended NBA coverage for about a year after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressed support for Hong Kong protesters in a social media post.
Morey later sought to clarify his position, saying he had listened to other perspectives and never intended to offend Chinese fans or sponsors.
The latest dispute underscores the potential commercial consequences international sports figures and organisations may face when their public comments conflict with China’s political sensitivities.

Nigerian Samson Adamu Appointed CAF General Secretary
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the latest Nigerian to occupy a key administrative position in African football.
CAF announced the appointment in a statement published on its official website on Sunday, following what it described as a comprehensive recruitment process.
Adamu had been serving as Acting General Secretary since March, following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who later became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The new CAF General Secretary has spent eight years with the continental football governing body, having joined the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.
During his time at CAF, Adamu played a leading role in organising several major continental football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF President Patrice Motsepe, commenting on the appointment, said Adamu’s experience and understanding of the organisation made him suitable for the position.
“Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.
“He has played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions, including CAF’s flagship tournament, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations,” Motsepe was quoted as saying.
Adamu is a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an academic qualification that focuses on the management and administration of sports.
In his new position, he is expected to oversee CAF’s day-to-day administrative operations and support the implementation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.
He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in Nigeria’s then Ministry of Sports and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee.
His appointment also places him among a succession of CAF General Secretaries with family connections to the position, particularly members of Egypt’s Fahmy family.
Mourad Fahmy served as CAF General Secretary from 1961 to 1982 before his son, Mustapha Fahmy, took over and held the position until 2010.
Amr Fahmy, the grandson of Mourad, also served as CAF General Secretary between 2017 and 2019.

Awoniyi Scores First League Goal as Coventry Defeat Sunderland
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi ended his Premier League goal drought on Saturday as Coventry City secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal of the 2026/27 campaign in the encounter, providing a timely boost for Frank Lampard’s side in their battle to avoid relegation.
The Nigerian forward found the back of the net in the 37th minute to double Coventry’s advantage after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
His goal ended a frustrating wait for a league breakthrough this season, having managed just one other goal in the EFL Cup.
Awoniyi delivered an impressive performance, repeatedly troubling Sunderland’s defence before being substituted in the 72nd minute.
The encounter was regarded as a crucial relegation battle between Coventry and bottom-placed Sunderland, who are managed by Régis Le Bris.
Coventry strengthened their grip on the contest seven minutes into the second half when Jack Rudoni scored in the 52nd minute to make it 3-0.
Sunderland reduced the deficit in the 67th minute through Enzo Le Fée, who converted a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee review.
However, the visitors struggled to build on the goal and failed to mount a serious comeback against the hosts.
Their difficult afternoon was compounded in the 99th minute when defender Omar Alderete received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Sunderland with 10 players.
The victory handed Coventry three valuable points as they continue their fight for Premier League survival, while Awoniyi’s breakthrough goal will provide encouragement as the season progresses.
