The House of Representatives has commenced a clause-by-clause consideration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s State Police Bill, marking a significant step in the National Assembly’s ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing system.

The review follows the harmonisation of the proposed legislation with the version earlier considered by the Senate, as lawmakers work towards establishing a legal framework for the creation and operation of state police across the country.

During the legislative session, members of the House scrutinised individual clauses of the bill to ensure consistency with constitutional provisions and align it with the Senate’s recommendations.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend relevant sections of the Constitution to allow states to establish and manage their own police services while defining the relationship between federal and state policing structures.

The clause-by-clause review is one of the final legislative stages before the bill can proceed to further consideration by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The proposal for state police has gained momentum amid growing concerns over insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and communal violence in various parts of the country.

Tension escalated in Gero Community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday after suspected gunmen reportedly killed two women, sparking a protest by angry residents that later turned violent and resulted in the vandalization of parts of the Jos South Local Government Secretariat.

The unrest also reportedly left a police officer injured after he was allegedly attacked while responding to the disturbance.

According to reports, the assailants attacked the community, killing two women under circumstances that have yet to be fully disclosed by security authorities.

The incident triggered widespread anger among residents, who staged a protest to demand urgent government intervention and improved security in the area.

Witnesses said demonstrators marched through parts of the community before converging on the local government secretariat.

The peaceful demonstration reportedly degenerated as some protesters vandalised sections of the Jos South Local Government Secretariat, damaging public property.

A police officer deployed to maintain order was also allegedly attacked during the unrest.

Authorities have not confirmed the extent of the damage or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
