FUTA Workers Protest Alleged Non-Payment of Allowances, Issue Seven-Day Ultimatum
Members of the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities (NANTS) at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) on Thursday staged a protest over the alleged non-payment of approved allowances, accusing the university management of discrimination.
The aggrieved workers marched through the university campus to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, chanting solidarity songs and demanding the immediate payment of their entitlements.
The protesters alleged that while members of other staff unions had received the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) and END Allowance, members of their association were excluded from the payment.
Addressing journalists during the protest, the Chairman of NANTS, FUTA branch, Adebayo Aladerotohun, described the development as unfair and contrary to the terms of the workers’ appointments.
According to him, the allowances had already been approved by the Federal Government for eligible university employees.
“A very unfortunate issue occurred in FUTA yesterday. They paid the CONTA and END allowances approved by the Federal Government but deliberately excluded our members,” he alleged.
Aladerotohun argued that the university wrongly implemented the government directive and accused the management of favouring certain unions over others.
“We have letters of appointment stating that we are entitled to approved government allowances. The management got it wrong by violating our instruments of appointment,” he said.
The union warned that it would commence legal proceedings if the issue was not resolved within seven days.
“We are giving the management a seven-day ultimatum from today, after which we will take legal action,” Aladerotohun declared.
The workers also vowed to sustain their agitation until the matter is resolved.
Responding to the protesters, FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Amos, appealed for patience, assuring the workers that management was already reviewing the matter.
He stressed that the university had no intention of denying any employee his or her lawful entitlement and reiterated the institution’s commitment to fairness.
“It is the right of individuals to belong to any union. Management will not, at any time, deny anybody what is his or her entitlement,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
Prof. Amos disclosed that discussions were ongoing at the highest level and that management would meet again with the union’s leadership to find an amicable resolution.
“We are better off if we sit down to talk. Nobody will shortchange anybody because we are all working together for the progress of FUTA,” he added.
The protest ended peacefully, with union members awaiting the outcome of further negotiations between the university management and the association.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
The examination body announced the release on Wednesday through a statement on its official X handle, confirming that candidates who participated in the examination can now access their results.
“UPDATE: 2026 WASSCE (SC) results have been released. Generate your PIN at waec.org and check your results now on waecdirect.org,” WAEC stated.
Candidates are required to generate a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and serial number through the WAEC portal before checking their results on the official result-checking platform.
The process requires candidates to provide their examination number and other details used during registration, including the National Identification Number (NIN), alongside contact information for verification.
Approximately 1.96 million candidates from more than 24,200 secondary schools across Nigeria sat for the 2026 WASSCE for school candidates.
The examination was conducted between April 21 and June 19, 2026.
While the majority of participating schools used the traditional paper-based examination format, WAEC recorded a significant increase in the number of schools adopting the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) option compared with previous years.
WAEC had earlier announced that the results would be released approximately 45 days after the completion of the final examination paper.
The release follows the earlier publication of results for the 2026 First Series Computer-Based WASSCE for Private Candidates.
The council advised candidates experiencing difficulties accessing their results to use official WAEC support channels and avoid fraudulent platforms claiming to offer result-checking assistance.
