US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan Over Alleged Chemical Weapons Use
The United States has imposed new sanctions on Sudan, accusing the country’s military-led government of using chemical weapons during the ongoing armed conflict that has devastated the country since 2023.
The sanctions, announced by the US government, follow investigations into allegations that chemical agents were deployed during military operations.
Sudan has denied the accusations.
US Announces New Measures
According to US authorities, the sanctions are aimed at holding Sudan accountable for what Washington described as violations of international law governing the use of chemical weapons.
The measures include restrictions on certain exports to Sudan, limitations on access to US government assistance, and additional controls affecting defence-related trade.
US officials said the sanctions were imposed under laws that prohibit the use of chemical weapons and are intended to deter further violations.
Sudanese authorities have rejected the allegations, maintaining that the country’s armed forces have not used chemical weapons in the conflict.
The government described the accusations as unfounded and called for impartial investigations into the claims.
The civil war in Sudan, which pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, displacing millions of people and causing widespread destruction.
The latest US action is expected to increase diplomatic pressure on Sudan as the international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access.
Human rights organisations and the United Nations have repeatedly expressed concern over alleged abuses committed by parties involved in the conflict, although investigations into specific incidents remain ongoing.
Why It Matters
The sanctions add another layer of international pressure on Sudan as the conflict continues to worsen. They also underscore the global prohibition against the use of chemical weapons, which are banned under international law due to their devastating humanitarian consequences.

Florida Learjet Crash Kills All Nine Aboard After Jet Plunges Into Residential Area
A Learjet 60 business aircraft crashed into a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, November 1, killing all nine people aboard and triggering a major emergency response, according to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
The aircraft plunged into the Greenacres area near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. The impact triggered a large fireball, scattered wreckage across the roadway and created a crater in the pavement near homes and businesses.
Duffy confirmed the fatalities in a statement describing the incident as a “horrific tragedy”. He said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was supporting the investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The identities of the nine people aboard had not been publicly released in the initial reports. Authorities had also not confirmed whether anyone on the ground was killed or injured.
Aircraft Was Flying From Texas to the Bahamas
The Learjet 60 departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the FAA.
The aircraft crashed shortly before 1 p.m. as it passed over the Greenacres area of Palm Beach County, south of West Palm Beach.
Flight-tracking data reviewed by CNN indicated that the aircraft lost approximately 27,000 feet of altitude in about one minute before tracking information stopped.
The rapid descent is an important part of the sequence investigators will examine, but it does not by itself establish what caused the crash.
Videos recorded by people near the scene showed the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground and erupting into flames. Thick black smoke rose above the area as emergency crews responded.
The circumstances surrounding the final moments of the flight remain under investigation.
Crash Sparks Fire and Disrupts Local Traffic
The impact caused extensive damage at the crash site, with debris scattered along the roadway and flames burning around the wreckage.
Emergency personnel, including firefighters and law enforcement officers, rushed to the scene. Authorities closed Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Local reports also indicated that the crash disrupted electricity in nearby areas. Officials described the response as an extended incident while crews worked to secure the scene and assess the damage.
The aircraft came down close to residential properties, including a mobile-home community. Initial reports did not establish the full extent of damage to nearby buildings or whether people on the ground had been injured.
The priority for emergency services was to control the fire, secure the crash site and support the investigation.
NTSB to Lead Investigation Into Cause
The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash, with the NTSB expected to lead the inquiry and provide further information as evidence becomes available.
Investigators will need to reconstruct the aircraft’s final flight, examine recovered components, review available flight and air-traffic-control records, and assess weather conditions and other potential contributing factors.
The aircraft’s rapid loss of altitude is a significant element of the investigation. However, it would be premature to attribute the crash to mechanical failure, pilot error, severe weather or any other specific cause before investigators complete their assessment.
CNN reported that thunderstorms were present in the area around the time of the crash and that the aircraft had passed through a stronger storm cell shortly before descending. Whether weather played any role had not been established.
The investigation is expected to examine the available evidence before drawing conclusions about what happened.
Crash Occurred Near Trump’s Florida Residence
The crash site was several miles from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s private club and residence in Palm Beach.
Trump had been in the West Palm Beach area earlier on Sunday before departing aboard Air Force One, according to CNN.
The crash occurred near Palm Beach International Airport, which was renamed Palm Beach International Airport at President Donald J. Trump’s direction earlier in 2026.
The proximity to Mar-a-Lago has prompted attention online, but the information released by authorities has not established a connection between the crash and the president’s security arrangements.
There is no verified evidence in the initial reports that the aircraft was brought down by an external intervention. The cause remains undetermined, and speculation should not be treated as an investigative finding.
Families Await Identification of Victims
The deaths of all nine people aboard the aircraft make the crash a major aviation tragedy. Authorities had not immediately released the names of the victims or detailed the circumstances of their travel.
Investigators and local authorities will need to establish the identities of those killed, notify their families and determine the sequence of events that led to the aircraft’s descent and impact.
The NTSB’s findings will be central to explaining why the Learjet went down and whether any safety lessons or recommendations emerge from the investigation.
For now, the confirmed facts are that the Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County while travelling from Texas to the Bahamas, all nine people aboard died, and federal authorities are investigating the cause.
Nigeria Insight will update this report as investigators release verified information about the victims and the circumstances of the crash.

MTN Nigeria Posts N1.17tn Profit in Nine Months, Up 55%
MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has reported a 55.3 per cent increase in profit after tax to N1.17tn for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, driven by strong revenue growth, improved operating performance and rising demand for data services.
The telecommunications giant disclosed this in its unaudited financial results released on Friday, showing that profit after tax increased from N750.2bn recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
According to the report, service revenue grew by 23.7 per cent to N4.6tn, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 36.8 per cent to N2.6tn.
Earnings per share also increased by 55.3 per cent to N55.60, while free cash flow climbed by 57.5 per cent to N1.17tn.
The impressive performance was accompanied by an expansion in the company’s customer base, which reached 94.7 million subscribers, including 57.2 million active data users.
The figures highlight the growing contribution of internet consumption and digital connectivity to MTN Nigeria’s business operations.
Commenting on the performance, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, attributed the growth to increasing demand for connectivity and sustained investment in network infrastructure.
He said millions of Nigerians rely on the company’s services daily for work, education, business activities and communication, making continued investment necessary to meet rising demand.
To strengthen its network capacity and expand coverage, MTN Nigeria increased its capital expenditure, excluding leases, by 14.2 per cent to N864.8bn during the nine-month period.
Toriola identified the expansion of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services as a major component of the investment, noting that more households were increasingly relying on broadband connectivity.
He explained that the company’s unlimited fibre broadband offerings were designed to support growing household needs, including remote work, online learning and entertainment.
According to him, MTN Nigeria now leads the fibre-to-the-home market, with the service accounting for approximately 13 per cent of its total data traffic.
The development, he added, also helps reduce pressure on the company’s mobile network by freeing up additional capacity.
Despite the positive performance, Toriola acknowledged that fibre cuts and other infrastructure disruptions remained challenges to consistent service delivery.
He said the company would continue investing in network improvements to strengthen reliability and enhance customer experience.
Beyond its operational growth, MTN Nigeria’s financial performance also enabled it to reward shareholders while sustaining investments in infrastructure.
The company’s Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, disclosed that MTN paid approximately N861bn in dividends during the period, alongside its substantial capital expenditure commitments.
Kadri said the company had continued to pursue growth, strengthen profitability and reward shareholders while maintaining its investment programme.
He further disclosed that MTN Nigeria retained a positive net cash position despite its significant capital expenditure and dividend payments.
According to him, sustainable value creation requires strong earnings, financial discipline, customer confidence and long-term investment.
The latest results underscore MTN Nigeria’s continued growth in the telecommunications sector, with increasing data consumption, broadband expansion and infrastructure investment supporting its financial performance.

NAFDAC Destroys N8bn Worth of Fake, Expired Products in North-Central
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake, adulterated, expired and banned products valued at more than N8bn seized across North-Central Nigeria, with banned alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small containers accounting for the bulk of the confiscated items.
The destruction exercise took place in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, as the agency renewed its campaign against the circulation of unsafe products and the abuse of alcohol, particularly among young people.
Speaking at the event, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the confiscated products were recovered from manufacturing facilities, shops, markets and motor parks across the zone.
Adeyeye, who was represented by a Deputy Director of NAFDAC in the zone, Joseph Edor, explained that the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small containers below 200ml was introduced to curb their misuse, especially among young people and schoolchildren.
According to her, the affordability, availability and portability of such products make them easily accessible and increase the risk of abuse.
She warned that early exposure to alcohol could have serious consequences for brain development, general health and academic performance.
“Research has shown that early exposure to alcohol affects the brain and other vital organs such as the liver and kidneys,” Adeyeye said.
She added that alcohol misuse could contribute to brain damage, poor academic performance, reduced productivity and several illnesses.
The NAFDAC chief said concerns over alcohol abuse, addiction and associated health risks informed the restrictions and subsequent enforcement operations targeting prohibited alcoholic beverages.
She further disclosed that the products destroyed included counterfeit and expired medicines, unwholesome food items and unsafe cosmetics.
“It is in the course of carrying out these activities that this heap of unwholesome, banned, fake and adulterated products worth about eight billion naira was confiscated from manufacturing outfits, sales outlets, markets and motor parks,” she said.
Adeyeye emphasised that most of the destroyed products were banned alcoholic beverages packaged in low-volume containers of less than 200ml.
She commended other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders for supporting NAFDAC’s operations through intelligence sharing and the provision of security assistance.
Also speaking, the Nasarawa State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Dr. Gyani Stephen, said the destruction exercise was primarily intended to protect public health rather than punish businesses or individuals.
He warned traders involved in the sale of counterfeit, expired and banned products to desist from the practice, stressing that the agency would take appropriate action against violators.
In a goodwill message, the Nasarawa State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Daniel Saidu, represented by Yakubu Awoh, praised NAFDAC for its efforts to remove fake and expired medicines from circulation.
Saidu warned that allowing dangerous and substandard products into the market could expose millions of Nigerians to serious health risks, including adverse effects on their mental well-being.
The exercise forms part of NAFDAC’s enforcement efforts to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers and to strengthen compliance with regulations governing the manufacture, distribution and sale of food, medicines, alcoholic beverages and other regulated products.
The agency urged traders and manufacturers to comply with applicable regulations, warning that those found dealing in prohibited or counterfeit products risk enforcement action.
